das entkleiden christi oder el expolio ( Latein : Exspolĭum ) ist ein gemälde, das im sommer von begonnen wurde 1577 und im frühjahr abgeschlossen 1579 für den hochaltar der sakristei der kathedrale von toledo , wo es noch hängt . es ist einer von el Greco's berühmtesten werke . ein dokument vom juli 2 , 1577 was sich auf dieses gemälde bezieht, ist die früheste aufzeichnung von el Greco's präsenz in spanien . der auftrag für das gemälde wurde dank el gesichert Greco's freundschaft aus rom mit luis , der sohn von diego de castilla , der dekan der kathedrale von toledo . de castilla senior arrangierte auch el Greco's andere große kommission , an dem er gleichzeitig arbeitete , die gemälde für die toledanische kirche santo domingo el antiguo .
